Ownership shift to Bending Spoons raises pricing concerns for dependent startups.

Bending Spoons closed its acquisition of Airtable on September 4, 2026, an all-cash deal worth $1.285 billion. For any startup running its operations on Airtable, that's not background noise. It's a reason to actually map out what happens if pricing shifts, product priorities change, or both.
The deal itself isn't a red flag by nature. Airtable wasn't in trouble: over 500,000 organizations were using it, and annual recurring revenue had grown more than 20% year over year to around $480 million as of June 2026. Bending Spoons bought a healthy company, not a fire sale. The pricing question matters more, not less, because of that. A thriving platform with half a million customers is a much stronger base for raising prices than a struggling one would be. Evernote users paying $37 a year for Pro were, according to reporting from The Pragmatic Engineer, charged $250 a year by 2026, and Bending Spoons has a track record worth knowing here. Similar patterns have shown up at Meetup, WeTransfer, Hopin, and FiLMiC, among others the firm has acquired.
None of this means Airtable is doomed to follow the same path. Its enterprise value at sale, $1.285 billion, sits well below the $11 billion valuation it hit at its 2021 peak, and secondary markets had already marked it down to around $4 billion earlier in 2026. Airtable had also cut its workforce by 27% in 2023, well before any acquisition talk, so cost discipline was already part of the story. Bending Spoons could invest in the core product and trim only what doesn't serve paying customers. That's a real possibility. It's also just a hope, not something anyone can confirm yet. What's actually unresolved: the pace of future development, what happens to newer bets like Cobuilder and the DeepSky AI acquisition, and whether SMB and mid-market pricing holds steady or starts climbing. Nobody outside Bending Spoons knows the answers yet, and that uncertainty alone is reason enough for growing teams to know their alternatives before they need them.
Where Airtable breaks down as a team scales
Every Airtable limitation appears as friction long before it becomes a hard wall. That's the part that catches teams off guard.
Take record limits. The Pro and Team plans cap bases at 50,000 records, but the pain doesn't wait for the ceiling. Views slow down well before that. Linked record lookups start to lag. Automations time out, or worse, fail without telling anyone. By the time a team notices the cap is close, workflows have probably already been degrading for months.
Billing adds its own pressure. Airtable charges per seat, and the jump between tiers often gets triggered by things that feel like basic requirements once a company matures: SSO, more granular permissions, higher automation quotas. None of that reads as a luxury add-on to a sizable team. It reads as table stakes, and Airtable prices it that way too.
Automation limits are not an overage fee, they're a full stop. Team-tier accounts get 25,000 automation runs a month; Business gets 100,000. Blow past that limit mid-cycle and automations simply stop firing until the next billing period starts. No warning email fixes a broken customer workflow that quietly stopped running three days ago.
Then there's the API. Every tier, including Enterprise Scale, caps requests at 5 per second per base. For a team piping data into a CRM, an ERP, or a custom dashboard, that ceiling turns bulk syncs into bottlenecks. Real-time integration, in any meaningful sense, isn't really on the table.
Governance tells a similar story. Airtable is cloud-only unless a team is on Enterprise, which offers a private cloud option. SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and GDPR compliance apply platform-wide, but getting the actual audit reports means contacting sales directly. Audit logs, Enterprise Key Management, and Data Loss Prevention are locked to Enterprise Scale. HIPAA compliance is Enterprise Scale only too, and it requires a signed Business Associate Agreement. As of October 2025, Airtable also tightened its refund policy: removing seats or downgrading service mid-cycle gets no refund, so a team stays on the hook until renewal regardless.
These problems don't announce themselves. They build slowly, and most teams don't notice the ceiling until business-critical workflows are already sitting on top of it. A rough way to size up where a team actually stands:
- Under 50 users and under 100,000 records: staying put and optimizing usually beats migrating. The cost of a move outweighs the problem it solves.
- Between 50 and 500 users, with 100,000 to 400,000 records starting to hit performance walls: this is the window to build a transition roadmap while still optimizing what's there.
- 500 or more users, 300,000-plus records, several bases, and integrations layered on top: strategic migration should already be underway.
- Over 1,000 users with mission-critical data riding on Airtable: at this point, the platform itself is a liability.

A sound rule for early-stage founders: stick with no-code until something forces a hard wall. Airtable fits that rule almost perfectly at the start. But what if the tool itself isn't the problem, and the way it's used is? Tools like Airtable reward disciplined thinking and punish sloppy thinking in roughly equal measure. Treated as a real operating system, with actual governance around who edits what and how records get structured, it buys genuine speed. Treated as a shortcut that never needs revisiting, it quietly turns into internal debt that someone eventually has to pay down.
A few signals tend to appear right before that debt comes due:
- A base is taking in more records than anyone can reliably review
- Calculations need real versioning, not a formula field bolted on after the fact
- Customers need role-based permissions more granular than Airtable easily supports
- Multiple integrations are racing to update the same records
- Response times are slow enough that users notice
- The team is spending more hours patching Airtable workarounds than talking to customers
One hybrid setup working well for a lot of teams in 2026 stretches Airtable's useful life further than most expect: Airtable stays the operational database, Make.com handles the automation layer, and Supabase takes over any customer-facing data that needs real-time performance. That combination buys time without forcing a full rebuild before it's actually necessary.
But how does this affect the original budget a founder set at day one? Teams that start on no-code should plan for a rebuild somewhere around 100 to 500 users, or $5,000 to $10,000 in monthly recurring revenue. That rebuild typically runs $5,000 to $20,000, depending on complexity. No-code is a starting line, and the rebuild comes later. The shortcuts that get a product live over a weekend become ceilings the moment real traction shows up, and the right time to deal with that debt is when users arrive, not after they start leaving. None of this is a moral failing on the founder's part. It's a predictable stage. What matters is catching it before it turns into a growth blocker instead of after.
How to frame the alternatives decision before evaluating any specific tool
Airtable alternatives aren't all competing for the same job, and treating them like they are leads to the wrong pick almost every time. The field splits into four rough categories:
- Open-source or self-hosted tools, for teams where data sovereignty, compliance, or avoiding vendor lock-in is the actual constraint
- No-code database or Work OS platforms, for teams that want Airtable's ease of use paired with more project management depth or friendlier pricing
- Automation-first platforms, for teams where workflow automation is the main need and the database is really secondary
- Engineering-grade app builders, for teams that have outgrown no-code entirely and need production-ready internal tools or client-facing apps
Evaluating any specific tool against this list means asking the same handful of questions each time: What's the scalability ceiling, in records, API calls, and users? Is it self-hosted or cloud-only, and does that even matter for this team? Which compliance certifications exist, and at what tier do they actually kick in? Is automation native, or does it depend on bolting on Zapier or Make? How steep is the learning curve for someone who isn't technical? Is pricing per seat, flat, or free to self-host? And what's the actual lock-in risk if the tool needs to be replaced later?
The goal isn't finding whichever tool scores highest across every category. It's matching a tool's actual strengths to where a team is standing right now, not where it hopes to be in two years.
Nonprofits deserve a separate note here, because the math is genuinely different. Budgets are tighter, decisions run mission-first rather than growth-first, and staff are often wearing three or four roles at once. Baserow's free self-hosted tier and Freedcamp's free plan matter more to that calculus than they would to a fast-growing startup optimizing for speed.
Tier 1 alternatives: open-source and self-hosted options for teams that need data control
Baserow runs an open-core model: the core product is open-source under the MIT license, while additional premium and enterprise features are available on paid plans. Self-hosting is free, with unlimited databases. Cloud hosting runs Premium at $10/month and Advanced at $18/month, with higher-tier options available. Self-hosted deployments carry no record caps and no API rate limits (cloud plans do apply row limits per tier, plus a cap of 10 concurrent API requests), which removes the exact ceiling that chokes Airtable at scale.
Baserow also holds GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC 2 Type II compliance at the appropriate tiers, which is a real edge over Airtable's approach of reserving certain compliance features for higher tiers. Its AI Assistant, called Kuma, helps build tables, write formulas, classify and summarize data, translate content, and enrich records automatically. Its open-source foundation allows for meaningful customization without a full custom build from scratch.
Baserow doesn't have native automation on par with Airtable's built-in system. Teams need to bring in something like Zapier or Make to cover that. Best fit: privacy-focused teams, nonprofits, developers, and any organization where compliance constraints make data ownership non-negotiable.
NocoDB takes a different approach entirely. It's a UI layer that sits directly on top of an existing SQL database, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, MariaDB, or SQLite, without requiring any data migration. Cloud hosting starts at $12 per seat per month, or $108 a month for unlimited seats billed annually. The project crossed 50,000 GitHub stars in 2025, a solid signal of community traction for an open-source tool.
NocoDB's real value appears for teams that already have a SQL database living in-network for compliance reasons: it adds an accessible interface on top without moving a single row of data anywhere. That said, it's honestly more of a lightweight database interface than a full Airtable replacement. Reliability, built-in workflows, and usability for non-technical staff all lag behind what an operator managing day-to-day workflows typically needs. Best fit: engineering teams and startups that want to expose an existing SQL database to non-technical collaborators without rebuilding the underlying infrastructure.
Tier 2 alternatives: no-code Work OS platforms for teams that want more structure without engineering effort
Notion puts documentation and knowledge first, with lightweight databases layered underneath. The Plus plan runs $10 per member per month, and a free tier exists for smaller teams. It's a strong fit for teams whose core need is internal documentation and content-rich collaboration, but it's not a real substitute for Airtable's relational data modeling or automation depth. Complex workflows and heavy external database integration are where it starts to strain.
ClickUp bundles a wide range of project management and collaboration features into one workspace. Multiple paid tiers are available, with higher plans unlocking nearly everything on offer. Teams managing sales pipelines, customer tracking, and sprint planning in one place tend to like consolidating into a single tool instead of juggling three. The tradeoff: the sheer number of settings makes onboarding heavier, and smaller teams with simpler needs can find it overwhelming out of the gate.
SmartSuite positions itself as an AI-native Work OS, covering project management alongside broader operational and enterprise workflows. Its AI-powered features are oriented toward automated decision-making and operational monitoring. Its enterprise-oriented feature set makes it read as a step up from a simple database app. Best fit: multi-department enterprise teams or operations-heavy organizations that need GRC capability built in from the start, not added on later.
Monday.com leans heavily visual, with drag-and-drop columns, built-in automations, wide integration support, and a deep template library. Pricing starts at $9 per seat per month. It suits teams that need strong cross-functional visibility, particularly in marketing, operations, and client-facing work. As teams grow, though, costs climb faster than some competitors, and its relational data modeling doesn't go nearly as deep as Airtable's.
Smartsheet keeps a spreadsheet-like interface but adds Gantt charts, automation, and integrations with common enterprise tools, making it a recognizable step up for teams already working in spreadsheets and Microsoft 365. It fits medium to large teams that are comfortable thinking in spreadsheets and need structured planning with enterprise-grade governance. It's less visually dynamic than Notion or ClickUp, though, and can feel rigid for teams that iterate quickly or lean creative.
Coda blurs the line between document, spreadsheet, and app, supporting buttons, automations, and integrations it calls Packs. It works well for teams building lightweight internal tools or content planning systems around collaborative docs, sitting somewhere between Notion and Airtable in what it's trying to be. Its API is limited, though, which makes it a weaker choice for relational databases operating at real scale.
Freedcamp rounds out the list with a genuinely generous free plan, tasks, Gantt charts, and file sharing included, making it one of the more budget-friendly options in this tier. Bootstrapped startups and nonprofits that need solid task management without a steep price tag are the clearest fit here.
